Instructions for Calculating Score Breakdown

This page will describe how to calculate your score breakdown for each practice exam. After taking a practice exam Canvas will report an overall score. If we would like a more detailed break down of our practice exam result we can download and use the Excel file "TEAS 7 Practice Exam Score Break Down  Calculator" found in this module.

Before calculating your score breakdown it may be helpful to read  about how to TEAS test is organized into content>sub-content>concept

For the majority of students knowing which sub-content areas need work will be the most useful in focusing their area of study. Because there are so many concepts  there are not many questions devoted to each concept and missing one or two questions in a concept could calculate a very low percentage score even if the student is comfortable in that sub content.

Example: Student takes a practice science exam.  There are only 2 questions related to the heart on this exam randomization and student misses 1 of the 2 so it will show a concept score  S1.3 Cardiovascular system = 50%. Getting 50% on a concept may seem like a low score at first, but to get a better picture we look at the student's sub-content score for human anatomy and physiology and see they also got  16/18 or  89% of the A&P questions correct. Since the overall sub-content area of A&P had a high score (89%) a low concept score in 1 part of A&P is probably not something student show worry about. If student had a low sub content score  AND a low concept score then that could be a indicator for an area they need to focus study on.

Written Steps for Using the Score Calculator

Step 1. Complete a practice TEAS exam on this site for science, English, reading, or math. After hitting "submit you will get a score report.  IMPORTANT NOTE: For people that DO NOT have a Highline Canvas account test results and score summaries WILL NOT BE SAVED and you will lose them when you exit the browser so make sure you take pictures or screenshots of your results.

Step 2. The score report will give you an overall grade in the top right:

score report 4 out of 38

Step 3. The score report will also show all the questions on the quiz and mark if they were correct or incorrect. For the incorrect questions mark down which concept they belonged to. We can find the concept number  circled in green on the example below:

this question was incorrect and the concept it belongs to is listed at bottom of question

In the example above this question is labeled M2.3 which means the concept this question belong to was called  M2.3 Explain the relationships between 2 variables. The "M" means its from the Math content area. The 2 before the decimal means it is from the second sub content area of math (measurements and data). Note that we just have to mark down that it was a question from "M2.3" that we missed and we do not need to record down the full  concept title.

Step 4.  Download and open the "TEAS 7 Practice Exam Score Break Down  Calculator" found in this module. Once the Excel sheet is open, on the bottom left corner of the Excel sheet choose the type of exam you wish to calculate score breakdown for. In this case we choose "Math". Note if you think you have somehow "messed up" the excel sheet you can just delete the one you are working on and download a new one from Canvas.

Step 5. The opened Math sheet should look like this :

Step 6. This Excel sheet has had all its boxes locked so that we don't accidentally delete data  the only column you can input data is the "Number WRONG on test" column (highlighted in yellow/orange). Enter the number of questions  INCORRECT from the practice exam. In our example We missed one question from M2.3 assuming we got the other 2 questions from M2.3 correct we will enter a "1" for the number of incorrect in M2.3 as show below with the green circle:

using the excel calculator and putting in number incorrect

We can also see with the yellow circle on the right it is showing 66.7 this means that for M2.3 there were 3 questions total for this concept, we got 1 wrong (green circle/ what we entered) and  since we got 2/3 questions right our concept score for M2.3 is currently 66.7%.

Note: Make sure the number you put into the "number wrong on test" column is smaller than the number to the right of it (total number column). There are only 3  questions total for concept M2.3, so if we put in a 4 we are saying we got 4 incorrect which is not possible.

Step 7. Let's go ahead and fill out the rest of the "Number wrong on test" column for this math exam.  If you did not miss any questions from a concept you can put a "0" in the column OR leave it blank. Both will work

final score report with summary

The section circled in green is the calculated score breakdown and can give the test taker an idea of what areas to focus study on.

Reading the Score Breakdown

score break down for math section

The students overall math grade was 71.1%.

For sub-content 1 of math  (numbers and algebra) their  sub-content score was 70.0%.

For sub-content 2 of math (measurements and data) their sub content score was 72.2%.

Since both the sub-content scores are the same around 70 the student should focus on both equally as both would benefit equally from additional reinforcement.

If we look at the numbers and algebra section (M1.1 to M1.10) we can see that the lowest concepts were M1.4(50%)  M1.5 (0%)  and M1.7(50%)

If we were to summarize this students score breakdown  we could say:

Student would benefit from working on both Numbers and algebra as well as measurements and data sub contents.

Within numbers and algebra student would benefit the most from focusing on these math concepts:

M1.4 Solve equations with one variable

M1.5 solving real world problems with real numbers

M1.7 applying estimation strategies

This information above can help direct the student in finding appropriate materials to improve their test score.

If the student is working with a tutor then this information could be very helpful in letting the tutor know how to direct the student's study.
