Using The Canvas Inbox

Canvas Inbox is similar to email messages, but students and instructors have lots of flexibility for how messages will be received and sent. The Inbox is the central place to track all that. The best part is that neither you nor your students have to log into Canvas to respond.

Inbox conversations are different from Discussions. Though you can send an all-class message in either place, conversations are more likely to show up in a student's email, and are aimed at one-on-one communication. Discussions are meant for groups or even the whole class to participate in. You can learn more about Discussions in the Advanced modules of this class.

On the next two pages you will read about how you can send a message to an entire class and how you would reply to a message.

Pro-Tips

  • Show students you care by being highly present in the course: build in ways to get to know them, to help them get to know you, and to interact with them in multiple ways
  • Give lots of feedback, respond promptly to questions, and provide students with opportunities to give you feedback on the course.
