Options for Orienting Students
If students are just going to be watching your recordings, they don't need much information. You can embed Panopto recordings into any Canvas page or announcement, and students can click on the video to play it. If you'd like your students to know about additional playback features, such as the ability to slow down or speed up the recording, consider pointing them to the student Panopto orientation.
Panopto Orientation
There is a Panopto Orientation that you can add to your course to help students learn to view or create recordings. Below are a number of different possibilities for using this orientation. Combining these is likely to be the most helpful, for instance by including the full orientation as part of your Start Here or Support/Help information, then picking out a particular help guide the first time you introduce a recording.
Note: These student orientation materials cover both using and recording with Panopto. If you are not having students make recordings, you may need to edit the materials accordingly.
Link to specific how-to guides from class activities
This is particularly helpful if you expect students to create recordings, as that requires more complex activities on the part of students. To do this, take one of the guides and movies from the orientation, and add it as a link from the instructions for a particular assignment.
Include the Orientation in the Start Here or Support module
This option provides all the Orientation lessons up front for students. To do this, either:
- Link directly to the student orientation at https://canvas.highline.edu/courses/1015620
- Upload the entire orientation course as a module in your course. (See below).
If you link students to the orientation, be sure to include clear instructions about which part they need to complete.
Create an external link from the left nav in your course
If you are familiar with adding the Redirect LTI app to your Canvas course, you can create a left navigation link to the Orientation course, using the URL above. This has the advantage of keeping the orientation always available and obvious to students. The disadvantage is that it does clutter the left navigation.
What to do if your students run into a problem?
If there is a technical issue with Panopto, your students can contact the Help Desk.
In addition, students should be directed to the Panopto Support site Links to an external site. for additional information and troubleshooting tips.
