Accessibility Tools in Canvas

One way to use this orientation is to read the information here. Another way is to have your Canvas open in two places. Open this orientation in one place and have your Highline Canvas account open in another place. (For example, you might make two tabs on different monitors. You can do this at any computer lab on campus. Or you might open your Canvas account on a computer, and open the orientation on a tablet or phone.) If you have both this orientation and your Canvas account open, you can try the steps while looking at the instructions.

Canvas has two great tools that can help make Canvas pages more accessible and meet the learning needs of many more users. The features allow for read aloud, translation, focused reading, and alternative formats.

Immersive Reader

Immersive is a tool that will read the Canvas page aloud. It can also change the font, show different grammar structures, and change how many lines of text are presented, to increase focus. Many of the words also have a picture dictionary that accompany them.

To open the immersive reader, select the immersive reader button on the top right side of the Canvas page.

The play button for read aloud is located the the bottom of the screen and the additional features of immersive reader are located at the top right. There is the font icon, syllables and grammar, and line focus.

The font icon allows you to make the font on the immersive reader larger or smaller, increase or decrease the line spacing, and change the font type and color.

The grammar icon allows you to break words into syllables and highlight different parts of speech (like nouns or verbs)

The line focus feature allows Canvas to limit what is shown on the screen. This icon also can turn on or off the picture dictionary for words. When you click on a word in the text, you can see a picture definition. This screen will also translate the text into many different languages.

One word of warning: the immersive reader will not read images or videos. You will need to close the immersive reader to access the images and videos.

Alternative Formats

Next to the page title on Canvas pages, there is a little arrow icon. If you select this icon, it will allow you to turn the page into alternative formats.

These formats include ePub, electronic braille, audio, BeeLine Reader, and a link back to the immersive reader.
