Communicating In Canvas

One way to use this orientation is to read the information here. Another way is to have your Canvas open in two places. Open this orientation in one place and have your Highline Canvas account open in another place. (For example, you might make two tabs on different monitors. You can do this at any computer lab on campus. Or you might open your Canvas account on a computer, and open the orientation on a tablet or phone.) If you have both this orientation and your Canvas account open, you can try the steps while looking at the instructions.

Canvas has an "inbox" that lets you to send messages to your instructor and to other students in the course. Open the inbox and select "compose new message." This allows you to chose who you want to send a message to. Then type your message.

In the notifications setting, you can set it up so that Canvas will send you an email to your Highline email account when someone sends you a Canvas message. Under account, select "notifications". Then for "Conversations" decide if you want to never get updates (you will still see the messages when you log into Canvas), weekly, daily, or instantly get notified that you have an inbox message. To reply to an email, you can respond back to it directly from your Highline email, or you can log back into Canvas.

Announcements

Announcements are a way for large groups of people to get the same message quickly. Highline College will post announcements for the entire community. Your instructor will post announcements to the course. This can be about upcoming deadlines, important course material, or good things to know. Some instructors will allow students to reply to announcements. Some instructors will allow students the ability to post announcements. This can be helpful when you are working in a group, because you can post an announcement only the students in your group (and the instructor) can see.
