Submitting Assignments

One way to use this orientation is to read the information here. Another way is to have your Canvas open in two places. Open this orientation in one place and have your Highline Canvas account open in another place. (For example, you might make two tabs on different monitors. You can do this at any computer lab on campus. Or you might open your Canvas account on a computer, and open the orientation on a tablet or phone.) If you have both this orientation and your Canvas account open, you can try the steps while looking at the instructions.

Canvas allows for many different types of file submission. Here are a few types and how to submit them. Your instructor will decide what types of files they want for the different assignments. There are two different ways you might see the assignments depending on how your instructor sets up the course. To submit an assignment, click on the start assignment button.

Sample assignment page with start assignment button pointed to by black arrow

Option 1:

When you select "start assignment" Canvas will open up the area on the screen to submit your assignments. You can then select the type of file you want to submit, based on what the teacher has allowed.

Option 2:

After you press the "start assignment" button, scroll to bottom of the page and select what type of assignment you are going to submit. If you don't see the type you want to submit, click the three dot button and see additional file types. Then, select the type of submission and follow the directions to submit.

Upload file:

To use file upload, you will first make a document. So, you will open Word or Excel or whatever program you need to complete the assignment. Your instructor should tell you, but if not, ask! Once you have completed the assignment, you will save your file. Make sure you pay attention to where you save the file. Did you save it to your computer hard drive or to something like OneDrive (in the cloud)? What did you call the file? Make sure to remember the name to find it again.

To upload a file, you will select the "upload file button." You will select to "choose a file" and then the computer will open your File Explorer. This allows you to find the document you made.

Go to the folder where you saved the document (if you can't find it, try using the search bar and look for the file name) and then select "select." This will add it to your Canvas page. Then click "Submit assignment."

Google Drive: (only use the Google Drive LTI 1.3 if your instructor tells you to do that)

If your instructor allows you to submit a Google Drive file, when you select the Google Drive tab, it will open your Google Drive. You can then just find and select the document. Make sure you have updated the share settings to either anyone with the link or add your instructor's email to the "share" setting.

When you use the Google Drive option, Canvas will first ask you to "authenticate" and allow access. You can say yes. You only need to do that step once. After that, every time you open Google Drive in Canvas, you will see a your Google Drive to select a file.

First you will find the file you want to submit. Drive will show you the most recent ones first, but you can also search for the file by name. The file will be outlined in blue. Click "select" to choose the file.

Then you will be asked to double check that you are submitting the document you want to share. Check the selected file name and the click "submit."

Finally, you will submit the file through Canvas.

Don't panic if you get this message. It means things are working. Canvas will email you if there is a problem. You can always check later to make sure the submission went through.

If you wrote your assignment as a Google doc, but your instructor only allows file uploads, use these instructions (both words and a video) to turn your google doc into a downloaded word doc. Links to an external site.

Use webcam:

Some assignments might be a drawing or a document you create by hand and take a photo of. Select the "use webcam" option under file upload. This will open your webcam (make sure you have the camera on). You can take a photo of your work and then click "submit." webcam screen

Text Entry:

If your instructor allows this option, you can select the text entry tab. It will open a box where you can type your work into the box. Just like google docs and word, you can change the size of the font, use bullets, underline, and spell check.  Click "submit assignment" when you are done writing your answer.

Website URL:

Your instructor may want you to submit a link to something you find on the internet. This may be another resource you found to add to your learning. This may be a video or podcast you made in another program. Your instructor will give you instructions on what they are looking for if they use this option.

If you are using Google docs, you can submit your Google doc this way. You will give the instructor the URL of the Google doc page you wrote. Make sure you set the share permission to include either "everyone with Highline Google Apps" or type the instructor's email into the share box. Otherwise, they will not be able to see the document you made.

Media:

Canvas allows you to record directly in Canvas. So, you can make an audio or video clip of yourself sharing your thinking, answering a question, or completing a problem. When you select "media" Canvas will show you the "record / upload media button". Click on this button.

Record / Upload media screen in Canvas

This will open a new program where you can either record the media there (so make your video or audio clip) or upload a video or audio clip you made already.  Select the "webcam" and "mic" buttons to pick the camera or mic you want to use to record. Once you have completed the recording, you can give the recording a file name and the submit the assignment.

After you have submitted, you will be able to see that you have submitted. Instead of "start assignment" Canvas will have a "new attempt" button. You will also see "submitted" with the date and time and a link to the file on the right side of the screen.

You will not be able to use all of these assignment options for every assignment. Your instructor will tell you what kinds of files they will allow.
