Setting Up Your Settings

One way to use this orientation is to read the information here. Another way is to have your Canvas open in two places. Open this orientation in one place and have your Highline Canvas account open in another place. (For example, you might make two tabs on different monitors. You can do this at any computer lab on campus. Or you might open your Canvas account on a computer, and open the orientation on a tablet or phone.) If you have both this orientation and your Canvas account open, you can try the steps while looking at the instructions.

Your Profile

Your personal settings include contact information and other settings that will help your instructor and other students identify you and contact you. Profile pictures can help put a face with a name. You can also put a photo of something that is meaningful to you but is not your face (like a pet, a character, an image). Profile pictures can be uploaded in your personal settings.

Notification Settings

You can change the Notification Preferences in Canvas. This helps you to get the information you need, without getting overwhelmed by too much information.

  1. Click Account on the global navigation menu on the left side of the Canvas screen. [This is the blue bar on the far left side of Canvas]
  2. Click Settings to add additional email addresses or phone numbers to your account.
  3. Select Save and go back to the Account menu.
  4. Select Notifications
  5. Canvas allows you to customize the notifications you want to receive. For each course activity, you can select to not be notified, to be notified once a week, at the end of each day, or immediately. Push notifications allow you to set up phone notifications, if you have added that to your account information.
  6. You can decide how often you want to receive emails to your Highline email address notifying you about the different Canvas features. You can also change these throughout the quarter, if you decide you want more or less information from Canvas.
  7. Just a note that "Conversations" in Canvas is the Canvas inbox (email).

Notification screen with notify immediately, daily summary, weekly summary, notifications off pop out box for the Canvas activities.
