Project 1: Organic Forms Design
2-D Design In Progress through Week 5
Design Challenge I : Dynamic Composition, Organic Forms
Design an abstract/semi-abstract composition based on organic shapes (natural forms). Using reference photos as inspiration, you will recombine, enlarge, shrink, and rotate elements from multiple sources to create a new image. Focusing on shape & line, create a composition which utilizes complex negative space, movement and achieves unity.
Notes on Drawing:
It will be up to you to decide how simplified or recognizable forms will become in your image after watching the process demonstrations in class. You will be assessed on the complexity and effectiveness of shapes, not on representational drawing accuracy. However you choose to approach your image, the final product must be constructed with a high degree of craft.
Objectives:
-Create complex and interesting patterns of negative space
-Achieve a sense of unity and balance through: repetition, direction, similarity & variety
-Create a clear sense of visual movement (visual pathway)
- Execute your design with excellent craft (no excessive ink bleeding or sloppy mark making, pencil lines erased, clean and straight border, lines and shapes are crisp and clear etc.)
Phase 1 Process Work: :
Thumbnail Sketching/Composing
- 4 + Large sketches in your sketchbook showing possible design options
Materials:
Black Sharpie/Sharpie pen and/or ink
18” x 24” drawing paper
Format Requirements:
Must be 16” x 22” ( 18” x 24” with 1” white border measured)
Grading Criteria :
Visual Qualities
Composition creates movement/ visual pathway _______
Effectively utilizes negative space ________
Craft in construction/execution _______
Overall Complexity ( Uses varied line weight / line networks)_______
Project meets all requirements _______
Unity & Visual Interest ______
Works Hard
Student revises, asks questions, and makes changes to improve _______
