Assertiveness Exercise (submit under assignments)
Purpose: to practice using assertiveness skills in a real life situation. In nursing, there are several times each shift when you need to be assertive: being able to speak up for you patient with a provider, saying "no" to additional workload when appropriate, asking for what you need in a way that will be well-received by co-workers, setting limits with patients or visitors to name just a few.
Task: Students will identify a current situation in their lives where an increase in assertiveness skills would be useful.
To complete the assignment, the student needs to document: (Use template provided)
- Describe the current situation including their thoughts and feelings about the situation.
- Then, the student will develop a plan to be more assertive in this situation.
- Next, the student will actually have the conversation using their assertiveness plan.
- After the conversation, the student will document a 2-sided conversation and comment on their thoughts and feelings during the conversation.
- Next, the student will evaluate their verbal and nonverbal performance including what you would change.
- Finally, the student will reflect on what they learned from the exercise.
Remember to document both sides of the conversation (It doesn't have to be EXACT verbatim, but you need to include both sides)
