To grade a student's work:

  1. Click on the student’s name. and you will be taken to the Google Assignments tool in Google, which looks similar to SpeedGrader. On this screen you will see:
    1. in the top left corner, the student’s name,
    2. moving down the right-side column of the page, the file name and a link to the originality report,
    3. a place to enter the grade (points earned),
    4. the rubric, and
    5. a place to add overall feedback.

  2. Review the results of the plagiarism checker, if you've enabled that for this assignment. Once the plagiarism checker or originality report is done, the number of flagged passages will display. If there are none, it will read “No flagged passages.” In this example, there were 12 flagged passages:

  3. Click on the number of flagged passages, or the "open in new window" button to see details. A flagged passage means that Google was able to find substantially similar text on the web.
    • As you click each flagged passage in the detailed report, you will see both the source of the passage, and where it appears in the student's assignment submission.
    • If the student quoted and cited this text, of course, it’s not plagiarism. Make sure you check the context of the flagged passage, to ensure it's properly cited or quoted (or not).

  4. You can enter the grade directly, or use the rubric if you've attached one. For each rubric criterion, mouse over each box to see the criterion title. Click the name of the criterion to see detailed descriptions of each level.
  5. Type your overall feedback in the appropriate box.
    • Because all uploaded files are saved as Google Docs, you can leave comments directly in the file itself as well. Use the overall feedback box to alert students that you have done this.
  6. Use the navigation arrows at the top of the assignment page to move on to the next student.

  7. When you’re ready to send the assignment back to an individual student, click the Return button in the top right corner of that student's assignment page.
    • If you want to return multiple assignments at the same time, click the down arrow next to the Return button and select “Return multiple submissions.”

A few notes

Students have to submit! If a student uploads a file without clicking the “Submit” button, instructors won’t be able to use the rubric to score the assignment.

You can also sort the submissions when grading.  Click on the arrow next to “submitted,” and choose a sort by category:
