Hyflex Course Definition and Scheduling Guidance

Note: More support and professional development for instructors new to hyflex modes is forthcoming from EdTech.

Definition

Hyflex sections are offered in both face-to-face and online modes simultaneously, per the state coding guidelines for instructional mode. Students can choose how to attend the course, and change that choice throughout the quarter.

Courses can be called Hyflex if they are taught in any of the following three combinations of modes:

  • Face-to-Face + Zoom
  • Face-to-face + Asynchronous online
  • Face-to-face + Zoom + Asynchronous online.

Face-to-face and Zoom times can be scheduled as full seat time, or hybrid (reduced seat time) for all three options. Hybrid and online components should follow the scheduling guidelines for those instructional modes. Zoom + asynchronous online is not considered a hyflex course.

ctcLink Coding

There are two ways to code Hyflex classes: using the “Optional” mode code, or clustering sections of two different modes. Regardless of which is used, a note will be added to each section that explains the course options. Depending on the modes available, notes should read:

  • Face-to-face + Virtual - Students can attend class face-to-face in a classroom or virtually on Zoom at the scheduled time, and switch between options during the quarter.
  • Face-to-face + Asynchronous online - Students can attend class face-to-face in a classroom or participate asynchronously (not in real time) online, and switch between options during the quarter.
  • Face-to-face + Virtual + Asynchronous online - Students can attend class face-to-face in a classroom, virtually on Zoom, or participate asynchronously (not in real time) online, and switch between options during the quarter.

“Optional” Mode Code

This is created by using the “Optional” mode code. The “Optional” mode code is defined as “A course in which the student can choose to attend class face-to-face or take the class online (options are within one item number).”

  • This is a good choice when all three instructional modes (face-to-face, virtual, and asynchronous online) are offered.
  • Sections can be scheduled as full seat time or hybrid (reduced seat time), but will only show the “Optional” mode in ctcLink. Schedules for the face-to-face and virtual options will be included.
  • Students will have to attest to receiving the Covid-19 vaccination.
  • There may be regulatory implications for international and VA students.

In ctcLink, the following designations will be used:

  • Mode: Optional
  • Location: Main Campus
  • Schedule pattern/schedule: face-to-face meetings

Clustered Sections

This is created by combining two half- or one-third capacity sections of either face-to-face, hybrid, or online courses. Each component is assigned one of the three mode/schedule combinations for asynchronous online, virtual, and face-to-face.

  • This is a good choice when only two modes (e.g. face-to-face + Virtual) are offered.
  • Instructors teaching a cluster that includes an asynchronous online section are required to provide instructor-initiated regular and substantive interaction with students in that section.
  • Students in all clustered hyflex sections will have to attest to receiving the Covid-19 vaccination.

In ctcLink, the following designations will be used:

  • Mode: Depends on component
  • Location: Depends on component
  • Schedule pattern/schedule: Depends on component
