What about the virtual/Zoom part of my course?

The virtual/Zoom part of your course is when you meet with your students in real-time, using Zoom for interactive conversations, or Panopto Live Cast (see the online pathway) for a lecture-focused approach. To learn more about managing a Zoom classroom, check out the materials in the Teaching Virtual Classes pathway.

One important difference is how you make the transition between the virtual (real-time) part of the course and the online (not real-time) work. Students often have difficulty managing the non-Zoom workflow.

The other pages in this module identify some useful approaches to keeping students focused on both. Consider also:

  • Make an effort to close out the live sessions with specific instructions about what to do before the next live sessions. Include a slide in your PowerPoint, or have a document ready to share. Take students on a tour of the Canvas site, showing them what's due before the next session.
  • Structure the online work so that it's a regular routine from week to week. A consistent pattern helps students adjust to always knowing there's something to be done on the non-meeting days.
  • Talk about some of the work you saw in the online part of the course during the Zoom meetings, especially if it's going to help the students who did it succeed in the course. Highlight the behavior you want to see.
