Using the Zoom-Panopto integration

The easiest path to posting recordings of your Zoom sessions is to use the integration between Canvas, Zoom, and Panopto.

IMPORTANT: You must use a separate meeting for each class, and you must set up that meeting from inside Canvas.

Set up Canvas, Zoom, and Panopto

You only have to do this part once for each course.

  1. Go into your Canvas course and add both Zoom and Panopto Recordings to your course's left navigation menu. (How do I manage Course Navigation links? Links to an external site.)
  2. In your course navigation, click on Panopto Recordings. That will make the connection between Canvas and Panopto.
  3. Now click on Zoom in your course navigation, and create a recurring meeting in Zoom for your course. (Scheduling Zoom classes and meetings.)
    • While you'll be able to see all of your Zoom meetings, your students will only be able to see the Zoom meetings for their course. (If you only want to see your Zoom meetings for that course, check the box next to "Show my course meetings only.")
    • Zoom settings to considerWhen you are using scheduled meetings, you can choose to have Zoom start the recording as soon as you enter the room.  Zoom settings --> Settings --> Recording tab --> Automatic recording section. If you're using the Zoom/Panopto integration, remember to select the "Record in the cloud" option.

Record Each Class

Each time you start a class, you'll have to remember to record the class. (That's no different, right?)

  1. For each class, start your Zoom class session
  2. Click the record option, and choose "Record to the cloud."

At the end of the class session, your recording will be automatically added to the Panopto Recordings link for your course.

Be patient. It takes time for the recording to be saved to the Zoom servers and then some more time for Zoom to send it over to Panopto and a bit more time for Panopto to process the recording and make it available.  The longer your recording, the longer it will take.

Caption the recording

Once the recording has posted in Panopto, you can also caption it.

  1. Click on the Panopto Recordings link in your course.
  2. Click the Edit button below the video title.
  3. On the left side of the Panopto Edit screen, click Captions.
  4. Select Import automatic captions.
Panopto caption selection, highlighting Import Automatic Captions

  5. Edit the captions, if you wish.
  6. Click the Apply button at the top of the screen.

Note that the automatic captions will struggle with highly technical content, for instance compound names in Chemistry, or element names in Physics.
