Overview of using Canvas assignments
What to remember
You've taken the Canvas orientation, but maybe it's been a while, or you just need a refresher. Here are things to remember when creating assignments. Use this as a checklist, if you like.
- Give assignments a unique identifying name. "Week 1 assignment" is fine if you only have one assignment in week 1, but "Week 1 reading response" is even better. It tells the student what they're about to do (and it's easier to find in Gradebook later.)
- Follow best practices for creating effective assignments (on the next page in this module).
- Assign a point value.
- Add the assignment to the appropriate assignment group.
- Points, Letter Grades, Percentage? Choose how you want the grade to display for students. (We recommend making this consistent across all assignments.)
- Choose the appropriate submission type.
- Pro tip: If you choose "File Uploads," you have the option to limit file types. For example, if you can't view a Pages file at home, limit the file types to types that your word processing program can open.
- Choose the due date and availability dates.
