Captioning Panopto videos

How do I caption my Panopto videos?

Don't do it all yourself. Start with the options below.

Do I need to caption all videos?

Yes and maybe. Our general guideline is this: if you plan on using the video for more than one quarter, caption it. If you have a student with an accommodation, you must get it captioned.

How do I use Panopto autocaption?

The autocaption tool in Panopto does a pretty good job. You can easily edit the captions for anything Panopto gets wrong. It may struggle, for example, with technical terms.

You can find the directions here Links to an external site..  After you've completed your recording, give Panopto a few minutes to finish processing your recording. Once it's done, the "import automatic captions" option will appear. If you don't see it, give a Panopto a few more minutes.

How do I get someone else to caption my videos?

We're fortunate enough to have access to professional captioners through Caption Hub. If you don't see Caption Hub in your Canvas courses list, email et@highline.edu and we'll add you.

In the course shell, there are instructions for how to request captions for YouTube and Panopto videos. Make sure that you finish editing your video before you request your captions.

Turnaround speed

When making your request, there are options for the turnaround speed. Obviously, the quicker the turnaround time, the more expensive it is for the college. If you have a student that needs accommodations for captions, you need them quickly, so you can choose the 2-day option. Otherwise, choose the 10-day option.
