Calling students on the phone
How can you call students, without them seeing your home or mobile telephone number?
Highline College office phone remote telephone solutions
Avaya IX Workplace
The Avaya IX Workplace software will allow you to send and receive telephone calls on your mobile phone (iOS and Android) using your Highline College telephone extension number. When you have the app open, any calls to your office number will ring within the app. You can use the telephone dialer built into the app to make calls that will appear to come from your campus extension and will not display your cell phone number. When you are done taking/making calls for the day you can quit the app and your calls will go to voicemail just as they do when you are not at your desk. (Note: having the app installed does not affect your regular cell phone functionality.)
If you are interested in using IX Workplace please submit a helpdesk ticket we will then setup this feature on your extension and send instructions for installing the app on your phone.
Voicemail via the web/voicemail notifications
Highline's voicemail system has the ability to check voicemail and record messages via the web.
- Log on to https://voicemail.highline.edu using your extension number and your Audix password.
You can also have notifications and the actual messages sent to you.
- On the voicemail web site (above), set up notifications to email or text message.
- Include the attachment with an audio file of the message.
(See the full instructions: Using Avaya Aura Messaging Links to an external site.).
After listening to a student voicemail, you can call the student back using your personal phone. Dial *67 and then the student's number. On the student's caller ID, your call will show up as being from "anonymous" or something similar.
Other options
Old fashioned phone calls
- Dial *67 before you dial the student’s phone number. That will block your number from being displayed. The down side is that the student will see you as a blocked caller.
Use Zoom for phone calls
- Open your own personal Zoom room, click on "Invite Participants," then copy the invitation. Paste it someplace. In that invitation, find a west coast phone number (there's one in 253) and the meeting ID. Students can call that number, then type in the meeting ID to join your Zoom room by phone.
- Or, create a new Zoom "meeting" and a new meeting ID will be created. Click on "Invite Participants," then copy the invitation. Paste it someplace. In that invitation, copy a west coast phone number (there's one in 253) and the meeting ID. Students can call that number and use that meeting ID to join your Zoom room by phone.
Create an account on Google Voice
- If you have an existing Gmail account, use the login information to connect to Google Voice Links to an external site..
- You can choose a phone number, then share that with your students. It allows you to text as well as do regular numbers. (How to use Google Voice Links to an external site..)
- Highline Google drive accounts can't get Google Voice, so you will need to log out of your Highline Google drive and log in to your personal account for Google Voice.
