What is the process?

New courses, updates to existing courses, and course retirements must go through the curriculum review process. In brief, the process looks like this:

  1. Faculty member creates the change in Curriculog, the system we use for tracking this information.
  2. New courses and updates to existing courses go through a review of the student learning outcomes.
    • The outcomes should be vetted by departments ahead of time to ensure that they are the correct outcomes for submission.
    • On this step, the outcomes will be reviewed for measurability and clarity.
    • If there are questions about outcomes, the submitter will receive an e-mail, or the outcomes may be "rejected" since there is no way to "pause" the outcomes and modify them if changes are needed.
    • If outcomes are deemed measurable and no further inquiry is needed, they will be approved.
  3. Once the outcomes have been approved, the course continues through the approval process, including Placement Review, Department Coordinator, Division Chair, and so forth.
  4. When the course is fully approved, the relevant description information is automatically added to the Highline College Catalog for the next academic year.

Be aware that even if are only changing one thing, the student learning outcomes will go through an approval step. If you have not updated the course outcomes recently, contact Liz Word at eword@highline.edu) ahead of time to review them. The whole process will go faster.
