A word taxonomy is a literacy tool used to support students in developing an understanding of key concept terminology. Word taxonomies are currently used in many public schools rather than the 'old school' vocabulary tests which only require you to memorize the definition. Paraphrasing, putting terms into your own words, requires that you actually understand a term rather than just memorizing the definition. As many of you have done this quarter, adding color and visuals to your taxonomy have increased your understanding of the key concept terminology used in child development. Practitioners that work with children and families need to know these terms to be effective in their work.
I hope you have found the taxonomy a useful tool for you!
STEP ONE:
- ATTACH a picture of pages that has pragmatics and self esteem AND of the page you are most proud of from your taxonomy.
STEP TWO:
Taxonomy Reflection
- Post your thoughts about the effectiveness of the TAXONOMY for your understanding of the key concept terms in this course. On a scale from 1-5 (5 is highest). Explain your ranking.
- Do you feel the taxonomy assisted you in learning the terms? Explain your answer.
- Was it a useful tool for you? Why/why not? Integrate your metacognition into your reflection answer. (Eg. I am a visual learner, the taxonomy helped me because...)
Keep this taxonomy to use in other related courses, keep adding to your taxonomy as your knowledge regarding development and working with diverse populations increases!
