Learning Preferences and Intelligence

1) Learning preferences can be likened to your handedness, the hand with which you prefer to write.

TRY THIS!

Pick up a pen with your non-preference hand. Try writing your name, the name of your best friend, the color of your car, your age.

Reflect on how if felt to write with your non-dominant hand.

  • Did doing so impact the quality of your work?
  • Did doing so impact the speed with thich you could accomplish the task?
  • Did it impact your confidence level?
  • Did you give up? Get frustrated?

Now connect with how it made you feel when being asked to write with your non-dominant hand. What if you were forced to always learn in your non-dominant style. Could it potentially impact your success?

2) Now you have the opportunity to assess your own personal learning style. Think about what you THINK your learning style is before you do the questionnaire, then see how that compares to the results. As a follow-up, think about how many times you have assessed a child's learning style, and about how you may need to rethink your assessment.
