Discussion Boards - 3 posts each week

The discussion board is where you'll do a lot of communicating with other students.  You're required to submit THREE posts each week. I post new module content by midnight each Monday. Your first post in response to the discussion question is always due by midnight on Friday.  Your next two posts are always due by the following Sunday, midnight. (Your three reply posts will be in response to your classmates.)

Each week’s material is organized around a specific learning outcome. The reading and activities are all structured to assist you in achieving the outcome. Discussing your ideas gives you an opportunity to reflect on your learning and share your thinking with others.

To earn full points:

Make the required number of posts - 3 each week.

Be thoughtful and substantive - your post should connect with something important to you and the field of education!  Your answers are NOT only your opinion, but should show critical thinking, by integrating what you knew about the topic before you started (from your personal experience, other classes, etc.) and the NEW knowledge you’ve learned in the course. Connection with course session, reading, and activities is required. Use key terms that apply within your answer.

In terms of length of response, one or two paragraphs will be about right, although you can write more if you want. Writing less than a paragraph will make it extremely difficult to meet the criteria required to get full credit for your answer (see the rubric below).

Follow posting conventions - posting conventions can be considered the rules around how to write something.  Please observe the following to earn full points.
  • Posts should demonstrate reasonably correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar. This is college course work. While writing, consider if you would turn in what you are producing in a face-to-face class. "U" is not a pronoun.  It's a letter and should not be used in place of "you".  "LOL" is not appropriate.  I don't think that you want me laughing out loud at your work.
  • When posting for this course, please use the Subject line to state clearly what you plan to write about. Also, when responding to another post, select a sentence or two from the post you are responding to and copy and paste into your response frame.

Treat others with respect - remember, online communication can lack the nuances of in person discussion.  People cannot see your facial expression or hear your tone of voice.  In general, sarcasm does not work in an academic online environment.  Also, you may disagree with someone's ideas but any communication that is personally insulting or is discriminatory based on any aspect of a person's identity (age, ability, race/ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, religion, language/national origin or gender/gender identity) will not be tolerated.  In this case you would receive a 0 for the assignment and at the discretion of the instructor could be reported for violation of student conduct rules at HCC.

Relate your post to the reading - be sure that what you're talking about is directly related to the content that you're studying that week.
