Viewings for Week 1

Watch the following films for this first week. All the films are available online at YOUTUBE. For most of the quarter, however, required films will primarily be on NETFLIX. It's essential that you have your NETFLIX account up and running by the end of the first week.

The following titles are all very short (some are only 30 seconds while the longest are about ten minutes). While some of the films may seem a bit tedious, take a careful look at each one.

• Toy Story Zoetrope Links to an external site. -- This little video will help you understand how a zoetrope works and is crucial for understanding how film works.
• Muybridge Film Links to an external site. -- This is the little experiment that really started the whole idea of "motion pictures." Think about what's going on here in this film. What does it mean to "capture motion"?
• Lumiere Brothers Links to an external site. -- This is a collection of their "snapshots." I want you to pay careful attention to how the cameras are stationed in each shot (the angle chosen, the distance from the subject, etc.)
• Dickson Experimental Sound Film Links to an external site. -- Restoration of the first sound recording in film.
• La Voyage dans la Lune Links to an external site.-- This is a link to the narrated version of the film. It would probably be most helpful to first do the reading on this film before watching it.
• "Tonight, Tonight" Links to an external site. -- This is a music video of the Smashing Pumpkins' song. If you watched the Méliés film, it will be obvious why I'm having you watch this.
• The Great Train Robbery Links to an external site.-- As with the Méliés film, you should do the reading before watching this film.
