Student Orientation

While many of our students may be tech-savvy, Canvas may be confusing for some. To help your students understand how to navigate through Canvas as well as become aware of its many features, we recommend that you offer a brief Canvas orientation for your students. If you have specific needs for your classroom (such as extensive use of audio and video features) we can help you create an orientation module. For most faculty, however, we recommend that you incorporate a general student orientation that we have already created.

To do this, go to Canvas Commons by clicking on the Commons link in the Global Navigation Menu on the left:

Canvas screen, with Commons icon on left menu called out

Once you're in the Commons Page, type HIGHLINE CANVAS STUDENT ORIENTATION into the search bar.

Canvas Commons result search for "student orientation". A red circle is on Canvas Student Orientation.

On the first page of results, you should see the Canvas Student Orientation designed by Marc Lentini. Select that course.

Canvas Student Orientation information from Canvas Commons with red circle on green button that says "Import into Course" next to download icon of cloud and arrow pointing down.

Once you have selected Canvas Student Orientation, click on the green button that says Import into Course. Once you click there pull-down menu will show up listing all of your courses. Select the course into which you would like to import the orientation.

Pro Tip: Customize the orientation for your course. Put a how-to item right before a student will need the information: "Discussions: Viewing, editing, and replying" right before their first discussion post, "Check Your Grades" right after the first assignment is returned, etc. Delete orientation items you don't use.
