What Are Test Courses?

A test course is Canvas course shell, just like any other course you would use on Canvas. The only difference is that it has no students. You can have as many as you want, and call them whatever you want.

When would I use one?

Test courses are used for many things:

  • Building a course before the Canvas space is created for the quarter
  • Storing course materials from one quarter to the next
  • Creating a "Master Course" that you import into the actual teaching space each quarter
  • Testing and trying out new features in Canvas without an audience.

We only ask one thing: don't use this as a real class, or for creating department training, group project sites, or the like. You can learn more about using Canvas for department, project, committee and other sites later in this module.

One note: don't confuse this with the Canvas test server Links to an external site., which is for testing new product updates. That gets wiped out every week.

How do I get started?

Additional Test Courses can be requested via the Course Request web site. You'll have access to this site once you complete the Canvas Orientation. The Course Request web site is also available on the Educational Technology web site at https://id.highline.edu
