Using Canvas for Committees, Projects, etc.

Canvas courses can be used for activities beyond credit-bearing courses. Some of the things currently happening include:

  • Online staff training
  • Program advising sites, with all students from a program enrolled in a course
  • Support for committee work
  • Instructional program orientations

There are a few differences to how a Canvas course works in these situations:

  • Participants are not automatically enrolled. A member of the group must manually add them.
  • Each group must have one or more 'leaders.' These participants will have the same access that an instructor would in a regular course.
  • Multiple people can have instructor-level access. In fact, everyone could be given instructor-level access.

To use Canvas for one of these purposes:

  1. Review the policy on Non-course Canvas Shells Links to an external site.. Note that many requests are often better served by college web sites.
  2. Fill out the Canvas Shell Request Form Links to an external site.

Once the Canvas space is created, the leader/instructor takes over, adding participants and running the site.
